About/Join us!

The Spring Lake Fire Department is an all-volunteer department that provides world-class fire protection, rescue services, and emergency medical response to the residents of the Ulster Fire District #1. These services are rendered by highly-trained and dedicated volunteers that are committed to a tradition of excellence and adaptability that staff the Spring Lake Fire Department. These volunteers range in professions from doctors to teachers, and coaches and students, but are all devoted to constantly improving to provide the Ulster Fire District #1, it’s visitors, and the neighboring departments with the best emergency response as possible.

The Ulster Fire District #1 is the southern-most section of the Town of Ulster in the mid-Hudson Valley, and has a population of about 1,000 residents that call the district home. The district is suburban and mostly residential, but does include two commercial stretches on Lucas Avenue and Hurley Avenue, a portion of the New York State Thruway, undeveloped woodland, a high school, and a high voltage substation requiring the department to be ready for a number of different types of emergencies. The Spring Lake Fire Department operates out of a single station with three engines, a light rescue, and the Chief’s car. We have protected the residents and visitors of the Ulster Fire District #1 since July 8, 1957 when the department was first put into service.

The Spring Lake Fire Department has been averaging 200 calls a year but has recently been seeing an increase over the course of a number of years. We pride ourselves on being ready for any type of emergency alarm 24-hours a day, 365-days a year. On a fairly regular basis we share mutual aid between the Ulster Hose Company #5 in one direction, and the Hurley and Bloomington Fire Departments in the other direction.

We encourage you to thoroughly review the department, from the Chiefs and Board of Fire Commissioners down to the probationary firefighters, as we take a significant amount of pride in our organization, especially regarding transparency and professionalism.

All residents of the district are invited to stop in at the firehouse on any drill night (Monday’s 7:00 PM) to look around, to meet us, and to consider joining us. The department is always looking to fill more roles anywhere from firefighters to engine operators, to secretarial work, the Spring Lake Fire Department has a job for you.
